As a parent, you are the expert in your child’s life. At SDN we value family centred practice and the contributions that you as a parent make in your child’s therapy journey. We aim to provide support that is individualised, flexible and responsive to your family’s needs.
Research tells us that parent-led interventions have the best impact on children’s therapy goals. Thus, when your child is accessing speech pathology, occupational therapy and/or behaviour support, the professionals value your input with your child’s therapy goals and strategies. This might mean your role includes:
- Asking questions (there’s no such thing as a silly question)
- Providing an overview of your child’s day or routine
- Providing consent for therapists to share information about your child’s progress with other educators or therapists who might be working with your child
- Being honest about whether a strategy is working or isn’t suited to your family’s needs
- Providing constructive feedback about therapy
- Advocating for your child, their strengths, needs and any support that they might require
