Lemon experiment – create a ‘volcano’
This great alternative to the class volcano activity opens up a whole new sensory world.

What you'll need:
- White melamine platter
- 2 lemons
- Spoon
- Fork or craft stick
- Baking soda in a small bowl
- Red and blue food colouring
What to do:
- Roll each lemon between your hands to break up some of the pulp inside.
- Cut the lemons in half. Slice off a small piece of one half of each lemon so it can sit on the platter with the flesh facing upwards.
- Squeeze the juice from the remaining halves onto the halves on the platter.
- Add food colouring to each plated lemon half
- Sprinkle baking soda on top - notice the small bubbles
- Squeeze more juice onto the plates lemons and watch the volcano erupt!
