Sink and float – learning with water
What sank the boat? Develop children's understanding of weight through water play
Skills and benefits:
- Learning scientific concepts
- Understanding of cause and effect
- Fine motor skills
What you'll need:
- Aluminium foil
- Tub or deep tray
- Water
- Small items for placing in the foil boat - small stones, sticks and flowers, small toys
What to do:
- Fill the tub at least 3cm deep with water.
- Fold and shape a large square of aluminium foil to make a boat that floats. Older children can be challenged to design and make their own boat.
- Place the boat on the water and talk about what might happen.
- Ask your child to add the other assorted objects and explore. Does the boat sink or float? What happens when things are added?
